Five Corners

Methuen, MA
TEC worked with the City of Methuen to design improvements to the “Five Corners” intersection as part of the MassWorks Infrastructure Program. The project focused on promoting mixed-use redevelopment, improving roadway circulation, and streetscape for all modes of transportation in line with the Action Plan for Downtown Methuen created in 2017. The existing intersection, located in a constrained urban environment, contained an aging traffic signal, sub-standard pedestrian accommodations, wide pedestrian crossings, undefined vehicle travel lanes and no bicycle accommodations. TEC prepared the final design and bid documents for improvements that included traffic signal reconstruction with pedestrian signals, ADA-accessible wheelchair ramps, sidewalk reconstruction, the addition of landscape areas, a defined on-street parking area, and a shared-use path along Railroad Avenue to connect users to the rail trail. The intersection acts as a northerly gateway into downtown Methuen and the project complemented the City of Methuen’s new rail trail and other multimodal transportation initiatives. Final roadway plans will be completed in 2018 and construction is planned in 2019.
